Kellie has many strengths as a vocal instructor, but I think the most impressive and useful is her versatility. She is as comfortable interacting with me, a 32 year-old man who took AP Music Theory and played in his college’s Jazz Band, as she is with small children who are just getting introduced to music. And she really is dedicated to working with your voice: I had taken lessons before and stopped because the instructor kept insisting I match a certain timbre. Kellie makes you work hard but she also accepts your voice will have some natural inclinations that should be left alone.

Taking lessons from Kellie has opened my mind and my voice to bigger possibilities than I had dreamed to hope for before studying under her. She not only taught me better technique, but believed in my voice and my ability to reach my goals. In every lesson she pushes me to explore more depth, power, and simplicity in my singing.

Kellie, McHugh, Vocal Instructor, can be credited with enhancing my ‘Julia Child’ voice. Wait, I mean singing voice. Luckily, both are true and Kellie is the primary reason.

A pianist by nature I had dreamed of taking voice lessons but had little means of making it a reality. Although music was intertwined in my life at an early age the only role singing played was the occasion harmony in a choir or worship band, with my sole goal to be somewhat on key, devoid of any technique whatsoever. Add a super-talented sister to the scenario and my main singing stage became the shower. Then, I was introduced to Kellie and had the opportunity to complete a life goal. Now, while Kellie is a talented, multi-faceted vocalist with international
experience, that impressive resume doesn’t necessarily indicate a good instructor. Lucky for me Kellie is a phenomenal teacher who is completely dedicated to the success of her students.

Kellie’s dedication was proved after a short while, when my initial headway with engaging those wretched abdominals hit a wall. ‘Try to whoop, like you’re at a football game or concert,’ she instructed cheerfully. ‘Like a cheerleader,’ I thought sardonically. ‘That label has never been attributed to me, as any singing part was a low faux tenor than a light and bubbly squeal.’ True to thought process, the exercise could not be completed. That did not dissuade Kellie from seeking and then implementing a new exercise: speak like Julia Child. Funny enough, I latched onto the exercise, which proved the channel to further growth.

The best aspect of Kellie’s teaching is that while she has an extensive history in vocal pedagogy she is an approachable, sociable, and engaging personality with an aim of aiding your vocal journey. In addition, she posessess a keen teacher’s eye in analyzing underlying issues that potentially hinder the vocal process. Yes, she will push you and prod you, and you’ll get frustrated, but she’ll be there encouraging you the entire way! The voice is a tool to sharpened and an instrument which can be learned. She will refine your public singing voice while cheering on your life journey.

Hire Kellie McHugh for all of your vocal dreams. Speaking like Julia Child could be in the cards for you too! But really, it’s time for you to sing and sing fabulously.
